How to Join

1. Apply for the AFROTC scholarship.
2. Apply to NC State.
3. Enroll in the AFROTC freshman course (AS 121).

If you are a rising high school senior, you may apply for the AFROTC High School Scholarship Program (HSSP). Applications open the summer between junior and senior year, and close in winter of senior year.  Scholarships for highly-qualified individuals include tuition, books, fees, and a monthly stipend in one of three tiers:  unlimited (~top 5%), up to $18,000 at any AFROTC school (~top 15%), or up to the in-state rate (all others). If selected for a High School Scholarship and admitted to NC State or one of our cross-town universities, then you’re in and only need to enroll in the class:  Aerospace Studies 121 (AS 121).

If you happen to have missed the HSSP application window, it’s not too late and you can still earn the same Air Force scholarship money with an In-College Scholarship (ICSP)*! Once admitted to NC State, simply enroll in Aerospace Studies 121 (AS 121) in your freshman fall. That is the AFROTC academic class and accompanying Leadership Laboratory. Enrolling in class will put you on the detachment’s radar and provide us an opportunity to invite you to New Cadet Orientation (NCO), typically held in the week prior to the start of school.

The AFROTC commissioning program takes a minimum of three years to complete because we invest time and energy into our cadets to make you quality leaders.  There are a couple unique opportunities for condensed programs, such as legal and medical students, or short-term incentive programs determined by the needs of the Air Force at the time.

Freshmen

If you are a current NC State student or cross-town freshman in your fall semester, sign up for the spring AFROTC class. Prior to the fall enrollment deadline, you can still sign up for the fall class, AS 121, and we will catch you up. After the fall enrollment deadline, sign up for the spring class, AS 122, and your in-processing will occur during the first couple weeks of January.

If you are a current NC State student or cross-town freshman in your spring semester, try to sign up for the spring class, AS 122. If you miss the spring enrollment deadline, sign up for the fall AFROTC freshman AND sophomore classes, AS 121 and AS 221 (you will need a time override to enroll–just call us at 919-515-2417). The freshman and sophomore classes, taken concurrently, place you on a three-year track to complete AFROTC and commission as a second lieutenant in the USAF on time with your peer group.

Sophomores (and more?)

If you can add AS 121 and 221 to fall, AS 122 and 222 to spring (each one-credit electives), and AS 321, 322, 421, and 422 (each three-credit electives) to your next four semesters, you’re in. We’ve had many sophomores and even juniors complete the AFROTC program by filling three years of undergraduate academics. If you are struggling to fill three years of undergraduate academics, consider adding a minor; foreign language minors are very beneficial for your cross-cultural competence as an AF officer and can be great ways to earn other ROTC scholarships, such as Project GO.

If you’re worried about prolonging your undergraduate experience, understand that you must be a full-time student (12 credit hours or more) for at least three years in order to be eligible for AFROTC, except for your last semester, which only requires at least one class to be considered full-time (why not make it ROTC?).

In order to be eligible for the In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP), you need to be a full-time student (12 credits or more), have a qualifying college GPA (usually 2.5 or higher), a passing Fitness Assessment score (75 minimum), and a favorable commander’s ranking among your peer group. Eligible cadets are automatically submitted for fall and spring opportunities.
